Trevor Dylan Edwards
— Expressive Arts Teacher
Trevor Edwards is the Artistic Director of Glasgow Dance Theatre and the Studio Director of SOMA Center for Dance in Glasgow, Kentucky. A 2013 graduate of the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts for Dance. He holds a B.A. in Dance and a minor in Performing Arts Administration from Western Kentucky University. […]
During his time at WKU, Edwards developed a ballet called “The Lunar Effect” alongside mentor Meghen McKinley through research uncovering choreographic storytelling combined with dance on film technologies receiving honors for his Faculty Undergraduate Student Engagement Grant. He has danced professionally with Numinous Flux Dance Company of Nashville, TN; Jon Lehrer Dance Company New York, NY; The Stephen Foster Story, Bardstown, KY; Edwards served two years as resident choreographer and faculty with WRK. PLC. for Dancers under the direction of Jessi Peralta prior to opening SOMA Center for Dance.
In Fall 2019, Edwards made a major, intentional career shift, giving up the opportunities offered by metropolitan living and national touring to fulfill a lifelong dream: to bring dance to rural spaces– artistically “barren” lands– starting with his hometown of Glasgow in Barren County, KY. Dance colleague Abbey Lutts and partner Christopher Hobdy together with Edwards formed the team to open SOMA– a dance studio and community of dancers making dance accessible to all ages, sizes, shapes, colors, orientations, genders, and bodies because “every body” is a dance body. SOMA works to “unearth movement as a vital form of expression” in everyday living and people. Visit somaky.org for more information.
Edwards continues to progress his artistry beyond the classroom through solo performance work. In February 2020, Edwards presented his work, Barren Lands at The 4th annual Louisville Dance Series held in the Eifler Theater, Holy Trinity Clifton Campus on February 23, 2020. This piece worked to unveil trauma, childhood, and a rural upbringing through a mirror of adulthood & acceptance. Recently, January 2021, Edwards premiered THIS IS 25, a movement & written study uncovering the milestone of turning twenty five. This performance continued along the same theme working to unlock societal expectations, personal traumas, and the path to healing within the age of a post-global pandemic world.
Trevor is excited to begin teaching Guided Movement classes at The Nightingale in Bowling Green, Ky. He hopes to bring love, light, and play to a blossoming community of dancers.
Trevor’s Guided Movement class combines somatic practice, breath work, stretching and improvisational styles to center the mind and body. This is an open-level class and welcome to everybody— those who seek to practice vulnerability, creativity, and community through a guided movement practice.
